Mötley Crüe's Mick Mars Hoping to "Reinvent" Himself On Solo Album

2014 iHeartRadio Music Festival - Night 1 - Show

Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars is still plugging away on the solo album he's been working on for the past few years.

Mars has warned fans in the past that his new music doesn't much resemble that of Mötley Crüe, and he says he's still going in that direction.

"[It's] not like today's music, which to me is pretty much pop metal and more growly guys," Mars tells Billboard in a new interview. "It's all cool and it's all good, and I'm just searching for something that's just a little different than that. I don't want to be living in '85. It's hard to reinvent yourself, but that's what I'm doing now. I'm trying to reinvent the way that I approach music writing. I've got a lot of crap, and I've got a lot of good stuff too."

The guitarist has been working on the album since at least 2016.

Mars is recording his new material at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, with producer Michael Wagener, who's previously worked on albums by Crüe, Alice Cooper, Megadeth, Extreme, Dokken, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne and others.

The songs aren't instrumental, either, as some fans have suspected. Mars says that he's working with one singer on all the music. He's previously noted that his goal is to tour on the new songs, so he wants the same singer on each track.

The guitar great told Talking Metal in March that stylistically the music is "heavier rock," but "a bit harder" than what Mötley Crüe does.
