Although a lot of people are freaked out by spiders, it’s common knowledge that the arachnids are instrumental in controlling the population of invasive insects.

And now scientists have discovered spiders are also reducing the population of another creepy critter: snakes.

A study published in Tuesday’s Journal of Arachnology reveals there’s been an increasing number of spider-on-snake attacks all over the world, with most occurring in the U.S. and Australia.

The most common snake eaters are U.S. black widows, which researchers say are especially good at catching snakes in their strong webs.
